We’ve seen some pretty realistic renders of this latest phone from Xiaomi, but what about the reality?
In the video below (uploaded to Weibo by a user of “Hardware School”), we can see the Mi Mix Alpha housed in a glass box, with a beautiful wrap-around display.
In addition to showing a device with a screen that extends from the front to almost the back, the video also shows software-controlled touch buttons on the side of the device, as well as notification lights and icons. The icon appears along the curved edge of the screen when a notification arrives.
We also see a vertical camera bar on the back, with a primary sensor of up to 108MP, a super-large 20MP secondary sensor, and a 12MP telephoto sensor. The demo software running on the screen shows the device has a Charge Turbo feature – probably like the 40W wired charging technology and 27W wireless charging that has been confirmed on the Mi 9 Pro.
Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha – Pretty fit.
If the video is not enough, here are some pictures of “on-hand” Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha from the famous leaker Ice Universe:
These images give us a better idea of the size of the device, and indeed this is a fairly long smartphone.
With a price of up to $ 2,800, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is probably just a concept device to show off Xiaomi’s technology, not a regular flagship. In real-life use, this device looks extremely unrealistic and would be easy to … break the screen. But clearly, after watching the video, every one of us will want to have a hand and try it out with a unique screen-to-body ratio of up to 180.6%!
Xiaomi’s Mi MIX series has always broken the design boundaries, from the first Mi MIX model that initiated the bezel-less screen design, to last year’s Mi MIX 3 with a unique slider display design. And this year, when we saw Chinese smartphone makers follow the trend of waterfall display design, Xiaomi continued to surprise everyone with Mi MIX Alpha.
The smartphone has an incredible design, with a screen that surrounds almost the entire body. From the front, through both sides and around to the back of the smartphone. Only a single strip behind is equipped with camera cluster, flash and Mi MIX logo.
With this special design, Mi MIX Alpha does not need to own a selfie camera. Because when you need to take a selfie, you just need to turn the smartphone around and use the rear screen as the viewfinder. Status icons such as 5G network signal and battery are displayed on the side.
Mi MIX Alpha is equipped with Samsung’s 108MP camera sensor, which is the highest resolution sensor on smartphones today. Besides, there are two secondary cameras 20MP and 12MP. The rear stripe is made of titanium and ceramic, covered with scratch-resistant sapphire glass.
Xiaomi says it has used AI and special sensors to disable unwanted touches on the sides of the smartphone. A tactile feedback mechanism is used on the right side so that users can touch and adjust the volume.
Inside, Mi MIX Alpha is equipped with Snapdragon 855+ processor, 12GB RAM, UFS 3.0 512GB memory, 4,050 mAh battery, and 40W fast charging. With a fairly small battery capacity, it seems that the screen around the body of the Mi MIX Alpha will not be displayed continuously. The rear screen may only turn on when taking selfies.
Xiaomi also acknowledges that the Mi MIX Alpha is a “smartphone concept”, so it will only be produced in limited quantities.
